Auctions are a great place to pick up old tractors and this one was no different. My dad picked up this 1929 McCormick-Deering 1020 with a seized engine to use for a lawn ornament. It turns out the engine is in really good shape so we're going to get it running again. This isn't the best way to get an engine unstuck (it'll probably destroy a modern engine) but these old things have massive castings that hold up to some crazy loads... like shocking the flywheel over and over. We head to central Texas for the story of a beautiful W-9 McCormick Deering farm tractor like one that was used in the rice fields of the Lone Star State back in the 1950s. Bernard Selensky restored this tractor to honor the late Neil Burnside, a World War Two B-29 pilot and rice farmer who helped out with work opportunities back in Bernard's high school and college days. The McCormick-Deering WD-40 was an industry leader and holds the title for the first wheeled tractor with a diesel engine in North America. This tractor belongs to Bernie Wicka who is the same age of the tractor. This is the same tractor Bernie threshed with in the late 1940s and 1950s. The McCormick-Deering WD-40 is powered by an International Harvester 460 cubic-inch, 4-cylinder diesel engine that can do 37 horsepower on the drawbar and 48 horsepower on the belt. It has a transmission with 3 forward speeds and 1 reverse speed. A look at a 99 year old McCormick Deering 10-20 brass carburetor. This carburetor was manufactured by Ensign for International Harvester. This carburetor is restored to museum quality. With all new internal parts, this carburetor should last for another 100 years. I am not planning on selling this carburetor. Not for a year, or so, anyway. If I were to sell it, I don't even really know what the value of this would be.

Worse, many of the ads are obnoxious or offensive. I am considering dropping out of YT. This tractor is badged as McCormick-Deering, rather than Farmall. In 1937, McCormick-Deering had a long established reputation and name recognition for their high quality single cylinder stationary engines. McCormick-Deering took a different approach to starting a diesel than the pony engine used by some other manufacturers. Their diesel engines started on gas, and switched to diesel once they had warmed up a bit. Before shutting down, you switched back to gas to get the diesel fuel out of the system, to be ready for the next start, The switchover to diesel happens at 1:30. Farmers of the day were used to this method of starting, as many early tractors and stationary engines started on gas, and switched to kerosene after warming up. According to TractorData.com, it's a 28-44 claimed, but Nebraska tested at 37-48.8. Firing up a mammoth engine. Built from 1929 to 1934, this giant of McCormick's lineup sports a 7 litre kerosene engine and weighs in at 6500lbs. Over 57,000 where built before production halted in the worst years of the Great Depression. The engine is rated at 22-36, but in actuality it developed 30-40.
This is my 1936 McCormick-Deering 10-20, 10 horse power at the drawbar, 20 at the flywheel. This tractor sat outside as an ornament for many years, until I bought it this past spring. The F-4 magneto and Ensign carburetor were rebuilt / cleaned, and the oil was changed, probably for the first time in its life. In this video I outline the starting procedure, as well as drive the tractor.
