As he travels the Mediterranean, Jaafar Abdul Karim visits Andalusia in Spain. He tries flamenco dancing, tours the Alhambra, and finds his dream house on the Costa del Sol. In Tarifa, photographer José Luis Terrado shows Jaafar his photographs of refugees. Flamenco music has its roots in the south of Spain. In Las Negras, journalist Jaafar Abdul Karim meets up with flamenco performer Anabel Veloso for a dance. His Mediterranean journey then takes him into the interior of Andalusia. Throughout its history, the region has been a gateway to the Arabic-speaking world. More than 700 years of Islamic rule have left their mark, especially on the architecture. In Granada, Jaafar visits the famous Alhambra, a world heritage site. Back on the shores of the Mediterranean, the journey continues past beautiful beaches and picturesque bays to the city of Málaga. It’s located on the "Costa del Sol", where the sun shines more than 300 days per year. The climate attracts millions of tourists, especially from Germany and Britain. Many have bought property here. In Estepona, Jaafar finds his dream home: the architects José Carlos Moya and Bertrand Coue have built a solar house with floor-to-ceiling windows and 360-degree panoramic views. Its unique design allows it to follow the trajectory of the sun, all day long. Finally, Jaafar heads to Tarifa, just 14 kilometers across the sea from Morocco. The proximity to the North African side of the Mediterranean has inspired the work of photographer José Luis Terrado. His pictures depict migration and the conditions under which refugees from Africa have to work in order to survive. More than any other destination on his Mediterranean journey, Andalusia shows Jaafar Abdul Karim just how closely linked Europe and Africa are, culturally as well as economically. #documentary #dwdocumentary #andalusia #spain #mediterranean DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. ANDALUSIA (source Wikipedia): Andalusia is the southernmost autonomous community in Peninsular Spain. It is the most populous and the second largest autonomous community in the country. It is officially recognised as a "historical nationality". The territory is divided into eight provinces: Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga, and Seville. Its capital city is Seville. The seat of the High Court of Justice of Andalusia is located in the city of Granada. Andalusia is located in the south of the Iberian peninsula, in southwestern Europe, immediately south of the autonomous communities of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha; west of the autonomous community of Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea; east of Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean; and north of the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar. Andalusia is the only European region with both Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines. The small British overseas territory of Gibraltar shares a three-quarter-mile land border with the Andalusian portion of the province of Cádiz at the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar. The main mountain ranges of Andalusia are the Sierra Morena and the Baetic System, consisting of the Subbaetic and Penibaetic Mountains, separated by the Intrabaetic Basin. In the north, the Sierra Morena separates Andalusia from the plains of Extremadura and Castile–La Mancha on Spain's Meseta Central. To the south the geographic subregion of Upper Andalusia [es] lies mostly within the Baetic System, while Lower Andalusia [es] is in the Baetic Depression of the valley of the Guadalquivir.

If you are thinking about living or retiring in Spain consider one of the largest autonomous regions of Spain, Andalusia. It borders the country’s southern belt and extends downwards to the strait of Gibraltar. It is possibly the region that defines Spain in the minds of foreigners; from beaches to quaint whitewashed villages, flamenco to fiestas, this region has it all, including many well developed popular cities, Communes and a wide selection of famous small towns featuring splendid and unique architecture. The places listed in this video are some of the best to retire or live in this region. What’s more, despite the popularity of some of these places, the average cost of living is still very affordable and the region has cheap real estate on offer. As a whole, it is perfect for retirees, remote workers and snowbirds who prefer a lively lifestyle. So, here are 12 places to live comfortably in Andalucía Spain SUBSCRIBE : 🤍 FOLLOW : 🤍 Thanks for watching be sure to subscribe for more amazing content!

Saadane Benbabaali is an Algerian academic whose ancestors came from what is now the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. He has retired from teaching literature and Arabic at Paris University III. But for 15 years, Benbabaali has led groups of students on annual trips to Andalusia to share his passion and knowledge about the region and its rich history. He believes that the period of Arab Muslim rule over the Iberian peninsula was arguably the only time in European history when Muslims, Jews and Christians lived relatively peacefully together, producing a common culture and harmonious society. He also thinks that the period and place have powerful lessons for what he sees as today's fractured world. "There were beautiful periods of co-existence in Andalusia. So why not today? We need to cultivate the spirit of optimism in people ... Today, the difference is that everyone thinks they own the truth and will confront others. They're even prepared to kill for this," Benbabaali says. In 711, Muslim forces entered the Iberian peninsula from North Africa. They eventually occupied most of present-day Portugal, Spain and parts of southern France, which became known as al-Andalus as it joined the expanding Umayyad Empire During the Islamic 'golden age' between the 8th and 14th century, al-Andalus became a hub for social and cultural exchange, while the arts, science, architecture, agriculture, medicine and mathemathics flourished. Many attribute these achievements to religious tolerance and collaboration between Muslims, Christians and Jews, which is why that period of history is also sometimes referred to as La Convivencia, or co-existence. The era also produced some of the most significant scholars, poets, musicians, philosophers, historians and thinkers of the medieval age - such as Ibn Arabi, Ibn Rushd (also known as Averroes), al-Zarqali (Arzachel in Latin), al-Zahrawi (Abulcasis in Latin) and Ibn Firnas, among others. "Today we need all those [Andalusian] philosophers, thinkers and Sufis, who like Ibn Arabi made love the basis of human relationships," says Benbabaali. The retired university teacher subscribes to a school of thought that considers Andalusia's golden age to have been a beacon of enlightenment for Europe and the lands around the Mediterranean Sea. "Andalusia is a world that belongs to the past but this past had a reputation and an impact on the people who experienced it and left behind a culture, music and ideas that still exist today," says Benbabaali. The 'Reconquista' of al-Andalus As time passed, however, internal conflict resulted in the emergence of competing city-states and led to a gradual weakening of central power and influence. Muslim rule over al-Andalus came to an end in 1492 with the conclusion of the "Reconquista," a centuries-long campaign by Christian states aimed at recapturing the territories that had previously been taken by Muslim forces. Queen Isabella I of Castille and King Ferdinand II of Aragon initiated the Spanish Inquisition, aimed at re-establishing Catholic orthodoxy across their kingdoms. After royal decrees in 1492 and 1502, Jews and Muslims were ordered to convert to Christianity or leave Spain. An era of tolerance, peace and co-existence had come to an end - and even the descendants of those Muslims who did convert to Christianity, known as "Moriscos", were expelled from the country by King Philip in 1609. But, for some, the golden age of Islam still remains in the collective Muslim memory. A video of Mouaz al-Nass, a young Syrian Islamic musician, went viral after he gave the adhan [the Muslim call to prayer] in Spain's Alhambra Palace, which was built by the Muslim rulers of Granada in the 1330s. It's believed to have been be the first adhan heard there for 500 years and has been viewed over a million times on social media. Nass reportedly said he felt the walls of the palace missed 'hearing the call to Allah'. - Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 - Find us on Facebook: 🤍 - Check our website: 🤍 More from Al Jazeera World on: YouTube - 🤍 Facebook - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 Visit our website - 🤍 Subscribe to AJE on YouTube - 🤍 #AlJazeeraWorld #Andalusia #AlJazeeraEnglish

The Most Beautiful Towns in Spain encompasses those municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants that meet a series of essential requirements, among which are offering a quality natural or architectural heritage, in addition to other attractions and demands, such as urban homogeneity, harmony in the buildings and materials of the facades and roofs, in addition to other aspects such as the hotel, festive, leisure, cultural offer, etc. Being part of The Most Beautiful Towns in Spain or having been chosen as one of the 7 rural wonders of Spain 2016, is nothing more than the consequence of the effort to improve the image and tourist offer of Frigiliana. If you still do not know us, we will be happy to welcome you. The white village of Frigiliana is located just 7 km north of Nerja, in the Natural Park of the Sierras de Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama. The simplicity of its whitewashed houses that line its narrow streets make Frigiliana the ideal place to relax and break away from the daily routine. In the Barribarto, as the historic center of the city is also called, you can notice the influence of the Moors who reigned over this village until the 16th century. The narrow streets that wind between white houses make Frigiliana one of the most unique and charming places in the La Axarquía region. The Barribarto was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 2014, mainly due to the very good state of conservation of its historic center among the towns of the province of Malaga. Frigiliana is a municipality in the province of Malaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia in Spain. Frigiliana belongs to the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain association. #frigiliana #spain #andalucia #travel #beautifulvillage

In deze vlog trekken we door de Sierra Nevada naar de Costa del Sol. Dat was eerst even schrikken. Niet wat we verwacht hadden, maar uiteindelijk komt het wel goed door het prachtige stadje Ronda te bezoeken.
Made my way to Granada from Murcia. We spent about two days here in this beautiful city filled with unique historical areas and much to explore! We traveled to Southern Spain and hiked 8 of the best trails in Andalusia (Andalucia). It is very diverse and so is our list of the hiking trails—each one is the best in its "league" or category. These hidden gems are spread out through all of Andalusia, starting from Almeria in the East to the National Park of Sierra Grazalema in the West. This video includes also some travel tips and where to park your car at the trailheads. Two out of the eight trails require a reservation in advance: — The Caminito del Rey trail which has also an entrance fee. Tickets can be purchased for guided group tours which costs 18 EUR, or a single visit without guide for 10 EUR. We preferred the unguided tour, but there's a daily limit of 10 tickets in this category, and our dates was fully booked already. So we had to buy the guided tour tickets, but we ended up without the group as you can see in the video. — And the Garganta Verde trail which is for free but requires a permit that you can get by sending them an email to cvelbosque.amaya🤍reservatuvisita.es. They have several trails, so include the following information in your email: "I would like to apply for a permit for 2 persons: Name: ... Passport number: ... How many people going on the walk: ... Date: ... Walk: La Garganta Verde" The chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:49 Best Desert Hike 3:47 Best River Hike 5:41 Best Karst Hike 7:43 Best Village Hike 9:00 Best Gorge Hike 11:31 Best Mountain Hike 14:55 Best Historical Hike 18:47 Best Waterfall Hike 21:55 Outro The trails in order of appearance: Tabernas Desert Western Leone Trail Rio Chillar Trail El Torcal de Antequera Yellow Trail Molinos del Tajo Trail Garganta Verde Trail Cueva de dos Puertas Trail Caminito del Rey Trail Cahorros de Monachil Trail Find the trails on our map: 🤍 Subscribe for more hiking videos: 🤍 Check out our latest video: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Spotify playlist: 🤍
